Getting the Perfect Measurement

To get the most accurate blanket size, grab a friend (and maybe some horse treats) and a soft measuring tape.

How to measure a horse for a blanket

Step 1: Place one end of the tape measure right at the center of your horse’s chest.

Step 2: Run the tape straight back along their side, across the widest part of their shoulder.

Step 3: Stop measuring right at the point of the buttock (the bony part just below the dock of the tail, right where the “cheek” meets the tail).

Whatever number you land on is your magical chest-to-tail measurement! Type it into the calculator to get your sizes.

Understanding Your Results

Looking at US, UK, and European sizes side-by-side can be incredibly confusing because they actually measure two different things!

US & UK Sizes: These brands measure the total side length of the horse (from the chest, around the shoulder, to the tail). The US just uses inches, while the UK uses feet and inches.

European Sizes (EU): Many European brands measure the back seam of the blanket instead (from the withers, straight along the spine, to the top of the tail). Our calculator does the heavy lifting to convert your side measurement into the equivalent EU back seam size for you!

Fit Tip: If your horse has a very broad chest, thick neck, or wide shoulders, it is usually safer to round up to the next available size so the blanket doesn’t rub.
