It happens every year. The first frost hits, the wind starts to whistle through the barn, and you realize it’s officially “blanket season.” You head to the tack store or open your favorite equestrian website, and suddenly you’re staring at a wall of numbers that make zero sense.
Some brands use inches. Some use feet and inches. And then there are the European brands that seem to be using a totally different language involving centimeters.
If you’ve ever accidentally bought a rug that turned your horse into a mini-skirt wearer—or one so big they tripped over the chest straps—this guide is for you.
Why Getting the Fit Right Matters (It’s Not Just Fashion!)
A poorly fitted blanket isn’t just an eyesore; it’s a health and safety hazard.
- The Dreaded Shoulder Rub: A blanket that is too tight in the chest will eat away at your horse’s hair and skin, leaving painful bald spots.
- Slippage: If a rug is too big, it will shift as the horse moves or rolls. This can lead to the horse getting a leg caught in a surcingle or the blanket ending up under their belly.
- The “Rain Catch”: A neck opening that is too large allows rain and snow to run right down inside the blanket, leaving your horse cold and wet—which is exactly what the blanket was supposed to prevent!
How to Measure Like a Pro
To get the right size, you need one key measurement. You’ll need a soft fabric measuring tape and a helpful friend to hold the other end (and maybe a carrot for the horse).
- Start at the Chest: Place the tape in the very center of the horse’s chest.
- Follow the Side: Run the tape straight back along the side of the horse, staying level with the widest part of the shoulder.
- End at the Buttock: Stop exactly at the “point of the buttock.” This is the bony part just before the tail starts.
The “International” Confusion
The reason we all get so frustrated with rug shopping is that different countries measure different parts of the horse!
- US & UK: These brands measure the total length (the measurement you just took). The US uses inches (like 78″), while the UK uses feet (like 6’6″).
- Europe: Many EU brands measure the back seam (from the withers to the tail).
This is why a “78-inch” blanket is often labeled as a “145 cm” blanket in Europe. They aren’t the same number, but they fit the same horse!
Take the Guesswork Out of Shopping
I got tired of carrying a conversion chart in my pocket every time I went to the tack shop, so I built a way for all of us to skip the math.
Next time you’re standing in front of a sale rack:
- Grab your horse’s chest-to-tail measurement.
- Head over to our Winter Blanket Size Calculator.
- Type in that number.
We’ll instantly give you your horse’s size in US, UK, and European standards. You can shop with total confidence, knowing your horse will be cozy, comfortable, and perfectly fitted all winter long.
