Have you ever stood in the feed room staring at a mountain of hay nets, wondering if you are throwing your horse too much or too little? You definitely aren’t alone. Balancing a horse’s diet can feel like a total guessing game, especially when the weather turns cold or you have an easy keeper who seems to gain weight just by looking at grass!
But when it comes to forage (hay and pasture), there is actually a golden rule that takes all the guesswork out of feeding time. It is called the 1.5% Rule, and it is the secret to a happy, healthy equine gut.
Why Constant Forage is Everything
Before we get into the numbers, it helps to understand how your horse’s stomach actually works. Unlike us, horses are “trickle feeders.” In the wild, they spend up to 16 hours a day slowly grazing. Because of this, their stomachs are constantly producing acid to break down that steady stream of grass.
If a horse goes too long without eating, that stomach acid starts splashing around on an empty tummy. That is a fast track to painful gastric ulcers, colic, and a very grumpy horse. That is why having a constant, measured supply of roughage is the absolute foundation of any equine diet.
What is the 1.5% Rule?
Equine nutritionists agree that to keep that digestive system running smoothly, a horse needs to eat an absolute minimum of 1.5% of their total body weight in dry forage every single day.
For most horses in normal work or just hanging out in the pasture, the ideal healthy range is actually between 1.5% and 2%.
If you have a hard keeper or a horse in heavy training, they might need upwards of 2.5% to hold their weight. But for the vast majority of our backyard buddies, that 1.5% to 2% bracket is the absolute sweet spot.
How to Figure Out Your Horse’s Magic Number
If you don’t know exactly what your horse weighs, trying to calculate 1.5% of it is pretty much impossible. And as we already know, guessing their weight with the “eyeball test” is a recipe for disaster!
Here is the stress-free way to figure it out:
- Grab a soft measuring tape and find your horse’s heart girth and body length.
- Head over to the Equine Weight Calculator right here on this site.
- Type in those two numbers.
Not only will our tool give you an incredibly accurate estimated weight, but it does the heavy lifting for you and automatically calculates that 1.5% to 2% daily hay requirement.
No complicated math, and no more feed room stress. Just a clear, reliable number so you can confidently fill those hay nets knowing your horse’s gut is getting exactly what it needs to thrive!
